Why daily sunscreen matters more than you think

Sunscreen protects more than your skin's appearance — here is how to choose and use one correctly.

Most sun damage is caused by everyday, incidental exposure rather than a day at the beach. This is why daily sunscreen use is recommended for everyone who spends time outdoors.

Choose a broad-spectrum product with SPF 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply generously to all exposed skin about 15 minutes before going outside.

One application does not last all day. Reapply every two hours, and more often if you are swimming, sweating or towel-drying.

If your current sunscreen feels heavy or greasy, lighter gel-based or fluid formulas are available. If you have a history of skin cancer or notice changes in any mole or spot, see a dermatologist for a skin check.
